Summer Studio Class ScheduleIntroduction to Kakishibu – Explore the unique characteristics of kakishibu and experiment with the design opportunities available using the sun and simple modifiers. Take-home projects include a kibira (traditional Japanese cloth) tablemat, silk scarf and 3 skeins of yarn. 1 session. 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26 or Saturday August 23. $50.00 class fee, $30.00 materials fee.
Basic Kakishibu – Learn a variety of applications for kakishibu including paper, yarn and cloth. In addition to the same projects as the introductory class, we will also make a katazome (traditional Japanese stencil technique) wall-hanging and ikkanbari (washi and kakishibu covered basket). 3 sessions. 6:00 – 9:00. Thursdays, August 21 – September 4 or Tuesdays September 16 – 30. $80.00 class fee, $50.00 materials fee.
Kakishibu Complete – In-depth exploration of kakishibu’s unique properties. We will use variety of design techniques including modifiers and the sun as well as katazome (traditional Japanese stencil), shibori on cloth, paper, yarn and wood. We will make and expand on all the projects in the introductory and basic classes as well as stencil making, shibori and wood. 6 sessions. 6:00 – 9:00. Wednesdays, July 9 – August 6, plus one weekend day 9:00 – 4:00. $120.00 class fee, $80.00 (approximate) materials fee.
Cloth – Ideal for textile artists, quilters and crafters. Explore katazome, shibori and yes, the sun, to create dynamic surface designs on cloth. Experiment with different fibers and weaves. 1 session. 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 12 or September 6. $50.00 class fee, $30.00 materials fee.
Ikkanbari – Recycling, Japanese style. Learn the traditional folk craft of extending the life of a worn-out basket by covering it with washi (Japanese paper) and kakishibu. 1 session. Saturdays, July 26, August 23 or September 20. $50.00 class fee, $15.00 materials fee.
Washi – Discover the magic of washi, traditional Japanese paper. We’ll learn the traditional folk craft of ikkanbari (washi covered baskets), how to make “leather” paper as well as how to adapt surface design techniques to paper. 3 sessions. Wednesdays, September 3 – 17. $80.00 class fee, $50.00 materials fee.
